Blog Tour Stop: The Howling Heart

Title: The Howling Heart

Author: April Bostic

Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance

Paige Donovan is an ambitious college graduate who aspires to reach the top of the corporate ladder. She’s climbing fast when given the promotion of a lifetime at a prestigious fashion magazine in New York City. Her bright future comes to an unexpected halt after news of her father’s death. She inherits his old cabin in the Colorado Rockies, and just when she thinks her luck couldn’t get any worse, she has a car accident in the mountains and awakens in the small, remote community of Black River.

Soon, she’s engulfed in the mystical world of Varulv---wolves descended from 13th century Scandinavia and blessed by Norse gods with the ability to appear human. Paige is desperate to return home, but never expects to fall for her rescuer, Riley Gray, a charming young werewolf from England who offers her an alternate future with his pack.

Now, she must choose between the career she’s always wanted and the love she’s always dreamed.

Riley fell asleep first, and I felt his soft fur on my face. His body temperature was warmer. His front paws wrapped around me, and I realized this was the most intimate I'd been with his animal form. He would never sleep with me as a human, and I had to accept it if I was going to be with him.
Hours passed, but I hadn't fallen into a deep slumber, yet. I heard the wood floor creak and opened my eyes to find myself sleeping alone. I looked toward the sound and saw someone standing a few feet from the bed, the moonlight casting a long shadow on the floor. With a gasp, I sat up and turned on the light. My wide eyes stared at Riley, naked and wet.
"What are you doing?"
He just looked at me.
I leaned toward him, looked down at the floor, and saw muddy paw prints. I followed the trail from the open window to where they turned into human footprints and ended where he stood.
I concluded he'd been outside. "Where did you go?"
He approached the bed and got in next to me. I sat with my back against the headboard, too bewildered to scold him about his dirty feet. He rested his head on the pillow with his arm tucked underneath.
"I had to sort out Zoë."
I swallowed hard. "What did you do?"
He blinked once. "I punished her."
I released a haggard breath when I noticed smeared blood on his chest. Fear laced my words. "Why do you have blood on you?"
He looked down at himself and spoke nonchalantly. "Oh, I thought I washed it all off in the river." He pulled the quilt back. "I'll go take a shower."
He tried to get out of bed, but I grabbed his arm and shouted, "What did you do, Riley?"
"She tried to kill you, so I defended you," he said casually.
"Yeah, you saved me from a vicious mauling. Thank you, but I remember telling you to let it go."
"I couldn't let her get away with attempted murder. I won't tolerate that behavior toward my mate." He shrugged, and his tone still sounded carefree. "So, I made an example out of her." I gaped at him. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "It's within my authority to punish my subordinates any way I see fit."
Warning bells suddenly went off in my head. "Did you hurt her?" I asked meekly as I gathered the quilt against my chest.
He pressed his soft lips to mine, and then whispered, "The important thing is...she'll never hurt you, again."
This time, I let him leave the bed. He walked out of the room, and minutes later, I heard the rushing water from the shower.
I turned off the light and lay motionless, staring at the ceiling and thinking about Zoë. I knew the blood on Riley's chest belonged to her, and I wondered how it got there. How did he exact his punishment and make an example out of her?
He rejoined me in the bed after his shower, smelling of clean soap. He kissed my lips again and snuggled next to me under the quilt. His warm body enveloped me like a second blanket.
"Go to sleep," he murmured.
Once his breathing evened out, his human body flashed into a wolf.

What makes The Howling Heart different from other adult paranormal romance novels?

My werewolves are unique from other authors. Their existence is the result of the love between one wolf and a human during 13 century Scandinavia, and the supernatural intervention of Norse gods, Máni, the god of the moon, and Freya, the goddess of love. They are called Varulv, which is the Swedish and Danish word for ‘werewolf’. They are born wolves and can’t keep their human form for an extended time or if they fall asleep. A special light placed inside of them by the gods, allows them to shift between species. Varulv consider themselves wolves first, and humans second. They wear a human guise and can behave and speak like us. In the book, the hero Riley refers to his human form as a “tangible illusion”. He tells Paige, the heroine, he had to learn how to take human form when he was young. The gods allowed Varulv to procreate with humans, so I think hybrid births are very interesting. The parents wouldn't know what the child's human form would look like until it learned how to shift.

Friend or lover. Life or death…

Supernatural cop Ari Calin arrives at the hostile Toronto vampire court with an ultimatum from the Riverdale vampires: Sebastian, Toronto’s vampire prince, must stop his unprovoked attacks—or else. Ari wasn’t expecting a fight—the “or else” was typical vampire grandstanding. But even with vampire Andreas De Luca by her side for a show of strength, things get ugly fast. Toronto’s vampire world is in crisis, and surrounded by enemies, Ari and Andreas find themselves under attack.

Then Ari gets the call from the Magic Council ordering her home. Steffan, a good friend and leader of Riverdale's werewolves, has gone missing during top secret negotiations with the US government, and is believed to have been kidnapped—or killed.

Andreas can't abandon the Toronto vampires, and Ari can’t leave him to face impossible odds alone. Neither can she disobey her orders from the Council, or leave her friend Steffan to be tortured and killed. Ari's loyalties pull her in two directions—the closest thing to love she’s ever known on one side, and friendship and duty on the other. If she can stay alive long enough for the choice to matter…

Fangs flashed where her cheek had been an instant before. Ari whirled, crouching to meet the vampire’s return charge, and her fingers sparked, witch blood clamoring for action. Refusing its urgent call, she threw the magic powder as he wheeled and sped toward her in a blur. Green particles sparkled. A loud thump. The vampire recoiled from the invisible barrier and took two staggering steps. A direct hit. Before a smile more than touched her lips, the dark figure recovered and leaped. Ari backpedaled, but his weight drove her to the hard ground.

He grinned down at her, a lock of dark hair falling across his forehead. Trapping her arms above her head, he leaned close, his dark eyes glittering. He brushed her lips with his and whispered, “Better—but not yet good enough.” Andreas shifted his six-foot, muscled body, sprang up, and offered her a hand.

Ignoring the courtesy, Ari scrambled to her feet. Getting pinned by your boyfriend wasn’t always a good thing. “Back off, bloodsucker,” she grumbled. She shook out the fallen leaves and pine needles that clung to her long, honey-colored hair.

Andreas chuckled. A rich, warm sound. “Touchy tonight. Did I put your nose out of joint, little witch? And here I was, trying to help with your training.” Andreas glided across the forest clearing with the smooth grace of a natural predator. He collected their cell phones from under a park bench where they’d stashed them earlier in the evening and handed her one.

“Thanks.” Ari avoided his eyes. Damn right she was annoyed. She was competitive, and second place wasn’t good enough—even against a master level vampire. Especially one who wasn’t really trying to kill her.

Ally Shields was born and raised in the Midwest, along the Mississippi River, the setting for the Guardian Witch urban fantasy series. After  earlier careers as a teacher, lawyer and Juvenile Court Officer, she turned to full-time writing in 2009. She still lives near Des Moines with her Miniature Pinscher, Ranger. When not writing or reading, she loves traveling in the US and abroad. Way too often she can be found on Twitter.

I couldn’t take much more of the high school nonsense. I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be there. Where would I be if I weren’t there? … I don’t know. All I did know was I was in the middle of all that crap, going to class, taking tests – but I was on autopilot, going through the motions, waiting for life to start happening.
Sitting in World History and bored out of my mind, I was looking at a girl one row over who was the polar opposite of me. She was staring attentively at the teacher, her pen poised above an already nearly full page of notes, eager to write down every nugget of educational wisdom he was throwing our way. She loved high school, and she had big plans for moving on to college next year. She had cheer practice after school and a boyfriend named Mike who played wide receiver on the football team. Ugh.
I owned a pen. I probably had some paper somewhere in my backpack too. That day, however, I was using my pen to draw symbols all over my right hand – temporary tattoos. I write and eat with my left hand but do just about everything else with my right. My own body was confused with what it was supposed to do.
I was in the minority in that school. It seemed like just about everyone else knew exactly what they were doing now and what they were going to be doing until the day they died. Me? I didn’t have a clue. All I knew was this wasn’t it.

Author Interview

1. What do you like to do in your spare time besides writing?

I'm an avid gamer. Currently I own an Xbox and a PS3. I have over thirty games. Playing games helps with my writer's block.
I also love to read both books and comic books. I have a vast comic book collection.

2. When did you realize that you wanted to pursue becoming an author?

I knew as a young child that I wanted to create stories. I wanted to transfer my thoughts and creations onto paper. At first becoming a writer wasn't what I wanted to be. I actually wanted to be an Egyptologist.
After I had my first short story accepted for an online publication I thought, "Hey, I might be onto something." That's when I started to think that perhaps I could better my work and become a better writer. However, at the same time, I also felt like there was room for improvement. I still think that way and I do consider myself a writer.

3. Where do you get ideas for your novels from?

They randomly pop into my head. It happens when I daydream or right before I go to bed. Sometimes I have dreams during the night about certain characters. I came up with the idea for Deamhan about 9 years before I actually began to write the book.

GUEST POST: The Inspiration Behind The DeamHan Chronicles

Deamhan are different from vampires although I like to refer to them as "cousins" to vampires. I realize that there are tons of books out there that deal with supernatural creatures; werewolves, vampires, ect. Since there are a few novels which deal with psychic vampires, the idea itself is still somewhat fairly new. When this idea came to me, I already knew that I wanted to write something different from what I read and at the same time, try to stay true to the genre.
I had no idea that there are different types of vampires out there than just the average bloodsucking vampire. I learned about psychic vampires and that peaked my interest to the point that I wanted to write about them. I gathered as much information as I could and I had to choose which ones I thought fit into the story. I also had to make sure that while they are different from sanguine vampires, they possibly might still have the same weaknesses: sun, stakes, beheadings. I needed to consider how a human can be turned and how long it takes a human to turn. What did I want my vampires to be.

Blog Tour Stop: Devious Minds

Devious Minds
(A Shelby Nichols Adventure Series #8)
by Colleen Helme

It’s been almost a year since a near-fatal gunshot wound left Shelby Nichols with the ability to read minds. In that time she’s faced one problem after another. She’s been shot at, framed for murder, and targeted by a serial killer, just to name a few. Now she’s trying to help her lawyer husband win a murder trial that will enable him to become a partner in his law firm. Sounds easy, right? But nothing ever goes as planned when it comes to Shelby Nichols.

When special agent, Blake Beauchaine, shows up to collect a debt from Shelby, things get even more complicated, and Shelby is soon on her way to Paris. A routine meeting with a rogue agent reveals a sinister plot, putting Shelby into the cross-hairs of a known terrorist. Even worse, she doesn’t speak French, so it seems her mind-reading abilities won’t help her this time.

Things go from bad to downright dangerous for Shelby, especially since her usual guardians, Uncle Joey, and his hit-man, Ramos, are back in the states. Lost and on her own in the streets of Paris, can Shelby escape the cold-blooded killer in time to stop his devious plans, or will this be the end of the line for Shelby Nichols?

Available for purchase at

By the time we got to the sixth floor, I was eager to get out. Blake hid a smile at my nerves, and took off down the hall. He took out his keys and unlocked a door at the very end of the hall. As it swung open, my breath caught at the view from the window.

“Is that Notre-Dame?” I gasped.

He chuckled. “Actually, that’s The Hôtel de Ville where the city’s local administration is housed. The buildings just beyond those are on the Ile-de-la-Cité where Notre-Dame is located. In the distance, you can just make out the cathedral’s spire from here.”

“Oh yes, I see it now.”

“All of those buildings are actually on an island in the river Seine. In fact, Notre-Dame was built at the same spot where the Romans built a temple to Jupiter. The cathedral was first built in the twelfth century, but through the years, and because of the revolution, it fell into disrepair. If it wasn’t for Victor Hugo and his book, it may have been destroyed.”

“Wow. I didn’t know that.”

“Your room is this way,” he said. “Why don’t you get settled, and then we’ll go exploring?”

“Okay!” He didn’t have to ask me twice. The bedrooms were on the other side of the living room and small kitchen and were larger than I’d expected. “I thought you said this apartment was small.”

He shrugged. “These bedrooms used to be part of another apartment, but I was able to buy it and put in these rooms and bathrooms. You can use that bedroom.” He motioned to the bedroom with billowing curtains framing another open window which looked out over the city. “My housekeeper must have opened the windows to air the place out when she came in this morning.”

It was a little chilly, but I rushed over to look out the windows. The view was breathtaking. “This is perfect!”

“Good,” he said, clearly pleased with my reaction. “I’ll leave you to get settled.”

The door shut behind him, and I glanced around the room. A queen sized bed with a metal frame took up most of the space, and two bed-stands with lamps flanked either side. A large wooden dresser with a mirror stood on the opposite wall.

A door beside the dresser opened into a small bathroom, with the shower and basin all done in beautiful tile work. Fresh towels and soap, along with an array of small bottles of lotions and shampoo, lined the countertop.

This was amazing. I heaved a sigh, happy and grateful I’d come. I could hardly believe I’d almost chickened out. I would have missed this! I hurried back to the bedroom and unloaded my suitcase, placing my toiletries in the bathroom and my clothes in the dresser, then shoved my empty suitcase under the bed.

I quickly changed into a fresh blouse and my favorite black jeans and boots, then hurried into the bathroom to brush my teeth. After combing my hair and updating my make-up, I was ready to go. But first I needed to call Chris. The phone rang for the longest time before he finally picked up.
